"If you ask any author, I’m sure they will tell you that what they hope for most of all is to try and touch as many lives as possible. To craft a story that doesn’t necessarily need to appeal to others, but to resonate in part with them. This connection, and the ability to find some level of identity within the lines that is relatable can come through many forms. It may be through commentary, in respect to society, or their own life situation. It may explore their likes, hates, curiosities, or delve deeper into fears, and so forth. Whatever mechanism gains the readers trust and maintains their interest, ultimately an author must approach the story either from a perspective where, for want of a better word, ordinary people are put into extraordinary circumstances. Or, extraordinary people are challenged to contend with the opposite.

I think in HEROPLOT, what appeals mostly to my audience is not the genre of YA dystopian/ post-apocalytic fiction in itself, but rather the characters who assume a protagonist role. They often appear, at least for a time, to be very much ordinary. So much so in fact, that we perhaps see ourselves in them, or can recognise others we know by their traits.

For me, like all true heroes, the act of heroism—or it’s complete opposite for that matter—is born from necessity, and that necessity is created by a situation. A test, if you will, to the quality of the character and the often latent values that lay within them. Within us all. More importantly, that conflict. The complex struggle to determine what is right, and what is wrong, which is often juxtaposed and at odds with the ever-changing systems that society applies to measure and judge such outcomes.

I grew up in the seventies, where the world of Marvel and DC offered Superman, Spiderman, and everything in between. But in that age of comic book heroes, values were simplier. Traditional. They were set out twenty years earlier and remained, for the most part, unchanged. There was good and evil. A hero and a villain. And everything was very clear-cut. Today’s audiences are far more adept and sophisticated than those of yester-year, and I think HEROPLOT, with it’s modern take of a world in desperate need of saving—of rescuing—is as much an observational reflection of the times we now live in, and are increasingly aware of, and therefore perhaps has more relevance, certainly to young adult minds who are having to navigate this new space of their life, than the more wholesome, time-honoured approach to depicting a "hero".

Of course, I’m extremely happy to witness the growth of HEROPLOT. That the second and third books are also available at Barnes and Noble is thanks only to the readers and fans of the series to whom I am eternally grateful.

The Absolution of Kane was a test of concept in that it introduced the first “real” hero into The HEROPLOT Multiverse. So, naturally, I’m also very much relieved that the books were so well received. There are many more heroes to come, and I look forward to sharing the stories of each of them with you."
